Pohang in Autumn

If you want to visit a beach or a seaside city in South Korea, Pohang is a good choice.  Pohang is a city located in the North Gyeongsang Province, 경상북도 (Gyeongsangbuk-do) in South Korea.  Pohang is accessible by train or bus from cities like Seoul and Daegu, while city buses served as the local transportation.

When you go to Pohang, visit Jukdo Market, 죽도시장 (Jukdo-sijang) located near the port.  Pohang being a seaside city, Jukdo Market does not disappoint when it comes to seafood.  There are plenty of fresh seafood at Jukdo Market.

When you are hungry, try out the raw fish restaurants or eat some crabs, which are usually plentiful at the market.  The fishes and crabs are usually still alive and swimming, letting you enjoy only the freshest seafood.  The smaller crabs though, can be a pain as they don't have much flesh, but to get the flesh is really a chore.  Spend more money and take the bigger ones instead.

After filling your stomach, it is time for some sightseeing.  As you travel through the road along the beach, you will see many restaurants and accommodations catered for tourist.  There are some places with great sceneries as well here.

There’s a National Lighthouse Museum to visit as well.  Walk along the beach and find many seaside food stalls and enjoy the nice beach.  Since the water was already quite cold, don’t try to take a swim.  Unless you want to be all shriveled up or trying to catch a cold.

Keep walking and you will eventually reach Homigot, 호미곶 (homigot), where you can see a hand jutting out in the middle of the sea.  The hand is known as the Hand of Harmony.  There’s also a lighthouse with an observation deck.  There are many seagulls at the beach, buy some snacks and feed them while trying to snap a photo of a seagull eating from your hand.
